bergen ist eine Band aus Dresden und ihr Ansatz ist ein, nun ja, eher spezieller. Denn statt über Störche, Tütensuppe und reitende Prinzen (auf dem bergen-Debüt „Gegenteil von Stadt“ von 2009) singen die Sachsen auf ihrem zweiten Album Bärenmann auf einmal über alte Zausel, die sich Fell ins Gesicht kleben, um zwischen sieben und acht auf eigene Faust den Verkehr zu regeln, runzelige Frauen am Badewannenrand, verknallte Paare, die sich am Feierabend einen Suizid per Livestream im Internet angucken oder immer wieder über verkitschte, nicht mehr ganz so jugendliche Liebe, die einen durch den nächsten Winter bringen muss und dabei vielleicht auch schon die letzte ist.

Verpackt wird das Ganze in einfache Popsongs mit Folk-Appeal, mit Klavier, Gitarren, Schlagzeug, Bass, Klarinetten und große Melodiebögen zeichnende Bläser. bergen machen in der Sache da weiter, wo Distelmeyers Apfelmann aufgehört hat, sind kauzig und verschachtelt aber dann in ihren Harmonien wieder so simpel, traditionell und angenehm, dass man beim Hören reflexartig die Füße hochlegen möchte. „bergen haben einen ganz eigenen Klang, der ziemlich facettenreich ist“ befand Deutschlandradio Kultur vor einiger Zeit und wahrscheinlich ist diese Mischung aus erzkonservativ und befremdlich, versponnen und lahmarschig auch der Grund, warum sich Erdmöbel-Produzent und -Bassist ekimas nicht lange bitten ließ, dem Bärenmann ein passendes Klangkostüm zu nähen.

So erzählen bergen acht ausgedehnte Songs lang von aussichtlosen Kämpfen, zerplatzen Träumen, kranken Typen und klapprigen Beziehungskonstrukten, wenn die Sturm und Drang-Phase zunächst mal überwunden ist. Die Suche nach Halt wird zum zentralen Thema, oder wie es im Schlusstitel „Iona“ heißt: „Wenn wir jetzt sagen, dass das jetzt „immer“ ist, dann brauch ich Dein Versprechen, dass wir das beide packen. Denn manchmal weiß ich nicht, wie die anderen das nur machen.“

bergen is a band from Dresden, Germany, and their approach to music is a peculiar one. Rather than storks, powdered soup and princes galloping on their horses (topics from their debut “Gegenteil von Stadt” in 2009), the songs off their second record “Bärenmann” deal with windswept, old fellows gluing fur to their faces and regulating traffic in the early morning, with wrinkly women on the edge of their bathtub, and lovey-dovey couples watching someone’s suicide via livestream at the end of the day. You get the idea. Mainly though, their songs deal with love. A love that’s neither wild nor youthful anymore, but one that you depend on to get you through the winter. A love that may already be your last.

Their simple, folksy pop songs bear an irritatingly close relation to German Schlager music. Expansive melodies by brass and wind instruments, piano, clarinets, guitar, drums, and bass. The intricate and the odd bouncing off of the traditional and the homely. These songs appear both, conservative and strange, eccentric and lethargic. Most likely, it was these contrasts that convinced Ekimas - producer and bassist of the German critic’s darlings Erdmöbel - to sew the fitting costume for bergen’s “Bärenmann” (engl. “bear man”). Eight extensive songs about hopeless battles, weirdos, and relationships way beyond the “Sturm und Drang”.
